What to Expect During Healing
Proper aftercare is important to help your permanent makeup heal evenly and maintain the best possible results. During the healing process, the treated area may go through several changes that are completely normal.
- Swelling and temporary unevenness: mild swelling, redness, or tenderness is common during the first few days. With eyebrow procedures, swelling can sometimes make one side appear slightly higher, fuller, or less symmetrical than the other. This is usually temporary and should improve as the swelling goes down.
- Dark or intense color at first: immediately after the procedure, the pigment will usually look darker, brighter, or more intense than the final result. This is normal. As the skin heals and begins to flake, the color will gradually soften.
- The color may look very light during healing: after the initial flaking or peeling, the pigment may suddenly appear much lighter or as if some areas have disappeared. This can be part of the normal healing process. As the skin continues to heal, some of the color may become more visible again over the following weeks.
The final healed color should not be evaluated immediately after the procedure. Permanent makeup generally needs several weeks to fully settle before the final result can be properly assessed.
Aftercare Instructions
- Keep the treated area clean and avoid unnecessary touching.
- Follow your artist's instructions for gently cleaning the area.
- Apply only a very thin layer of the recommended aftercare product, if instructed.
- Do not scratch, rub, peel, or pick at flaking skin or scabs. Allow them to fall off naturally.
- Avoid makeup, creams, exfoliants, retinol, acids, or other skincare products directly on the treated area while it is healing.
- Avoid excessive sweating, swimming, hot tubs, saunas, and steam for approximately 7–10 days.
- Avoid prolonged sun exposure during the healing process.
- Once completely healed, sunscreen can help protect the pigment and reduce premature fading.
- Avoid sleeping directly on or applying pressure to the treated area whenever possible.
- A touch-up session may be necessary after healing to perfect the color, shape, or areas where the pigment did not retain evenly.
- Contact your artist if you have questions about the healing process. Seek medical attention if you experience increasing redness, severe or worsening swelling, significant pain, pus, fever, or other signs of infection.
